Vegetarian Quotes: Part 8

Wednesday, March 24, 2010

veg eat your veggies

All quotes from Jonathan Safran Foer's new book Eating Animals.

"According to the US Centers of Disease Control, poultry is by far the largest cause [of food-borne illness]. According to a study published in Consumer Reports, 83% of all chicken meat {including organic and antibiotic-free brands) is infected with either campylobacter or salmonella at the time of purchase."

"By the standards of the human rights community, the typical working conditions in America's slaughterhouses constitute human rights violations."

"...a worker explained, "I've seen thousands and thousands of cows go through the slaughter process alive... The cows can get seven minutes down the line and still be alive. I've been in the side puller when they're still alive. All the hide is stripped out down the neck there."

"One worker put it this way: 'The worst thing, worse than the physical danger, is the emotional toll. If you work in the stick pit for any period of time, you develop an attitude that lets you kill things but doesn't let you care... I could cop out an attitude that I was working on a production line, helping to feed people. But down in the stick pit I wasn't feeding people. I was killing things."

The Dairy Industry

Friday, January 29, 2010

veg dont eat me

ABC showed a video from an undercover investigation by the organization Mercy for Animals. The video shows the treatment of dairy cows by Willet Dairy in Locke, New York. Willet Dairy is New York's largest dairy producer and they provide the milk that goes into the mozzarella cheese in Papa John's, Domino's, and Pizza Hut as well as milk to many other companies.

The video shows cows with open wounds, infections, and swollen joints. It shows "downed" cows that are too sick to stand, left to die. It shows calves having their horns and tails cut off. It shows workers physically abusing the cows. It shows much more as well.

Once again, this is the largest dairy producer in New York. This isn't one isolated, tiny incident, this is milk that goes into products around the country, products you've probably consumed. This is just one of the many videos like this of animals being abused. This is what happens. Happy cows are a lie perpetuated by the dairy industry to hide the horrible truth, because if everyone knew the truth, no one would eat cheese, yogurt, or ice cream, or drink milk by the gallon. Your every day, run of the mill, dairy cow goes through hell just to provide us all with a cold summer treat that can easily be substitued by soy or rice ice cream. The cows live in filthy, crowded conditions, where they are impregnated over and over and consistently have their babies taken away from them just to provide you with that cheese pizza we just "have to have." Happy dairy is a fantasty. This is truth. Click here to see the video and know where your food is coming from. If you are going to eat it, you at least owe it to yourselves and to the cows to know what dairy really means.

Vegetarian Quotes: Part 7

Wednesday, January 27, 2010

veg google factory farming

Another installment of quotes about vegetarianism, enjoy!

"Recognize meat for what it really is: the antibiotic and pesticide-laden corpse of a tortured animal."
-Ingrid Newkirk

"I have been particularly concerned with the sufferings of chickens for many years. It was the death of a chicken that finally strengthened my resolve to become vegetarian. … These days, when I see a row of plucked chickens hanging in a meat shop, it hurts. I find it unacceptable that violence is the basis of some of our food habits."
-Dalai Lama

"Thousands of people who say they ‘love' animals sit down once or twice a day to enjoy the flesh of creatures who have been utterly deprived of everything that could make their lives worth living and who endured the awful suffering and the terror of the abattoirs."
-Jane Goodall

"Now I can look at you in peace; I don't eat you anymore."
-Franz Kafka

Vegetarianism and Type II Diabetes

Tuesday, January 26, 2010

veg im not food

A new study has recently been published in the journal Diabetes Care. The study consisted of 38,094 healthy participants. Dietary intake was measured through survey methods of the frequency with which dietary protein was consumed and what the sources of that protein was (plant or animal). After ten years there were 918 cases of type II diabetes amongst the group participants. When their protein intake was compared to the incidence of diabetes, a strong correlation was observed. Those participants with a high intake of animal protein were at a greater risk for developing type II diabetes than those with a moderate protein intake of animal protein. Plant protein intake was not associated with an increase risk for type II diabetes.

Vegetarianism is helpful in the prevention of type II diabetes (along with a number of other illnesses). This could be especially beneficial if you are already at increased risk for diabetes (risk factors include: family history of the disease, excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, being overweight, and a sedentary lifestyle). So fill up on beans, nuts, and seeds for your protein rather than meat, dairy, and eggs to decrease your chances for contracting this disease.

What Do Vegans Eat?: Veggie Pizza

Sunday, December 27, 2009

veg animal rights veg

Yum, veggie pizza! This pizza is made with honey-free store bought crust (because it's easier), coated with olive oil and garlic, and then layered with spinach, tomatoes, red bell peppers, mushrooms, and onions. You really can put whatever vegetables you want on it and it will be delicious. I really like broccoli and artichoke on it too. Just a note, if you do use spinach, make sure to spread olive oil along the pizza crust and lay it in the olive oil so it doesn't get dried out. Just bake for the normal amount of time you bake pizza and eat up!
